Zoho Books vs Xero for Saudi Businesses

Xero is the accounting platform many Saudi startups and foreign-owned companies arrive with; Zoho Books is the one with a Saudi edition. This comparison covers what matters in the Kingdom: VAT, e-invoicing, Arabic and what the accounting system connects to.

The short version

Zoho Books has a Saudi Arabia edition with VAT returns in the required format, e-invoicing features designed for the Kingdom's requirements, Arabic interface and bilingual documents, and native links to Zoho CRM, Inventory and the rest of Zoho One. Xero is a polished global accounting platform with strong bank reconciliation and a large app marketplace, without a Saudi edition; VAT and e-invoicing are handled through configuration and third-party tools, and Arabic is not native.

We are an Authorized Zoho Partner and do not implement Xero. Companies that ask us this usually have Xero from a founder's previous business abroad; the question is whether to stay and bolt on Saudi compliance, or move. The sections below decide it.

Saudi VAT and e-invoicing

Zoho Books' Saudi edition produces VAT returns in the format the Kingdom requires, handles VAT at 15% with the reverse-charge and exempt cases, and its e-invoicing features are built for Saudi requirements, with the phase-specific configuration done during setup. Xero does not have a Saudi edition; VAT can be configured with tax rates and reports adapted, and e-invoicing requires a third-party connector. For a company that must comply in the Kingdom, this is the deciding section. See Zoho Books implementation and ZATCA e-invoicing.

Arabic and bilingual documents

Zoho Books has an Arabic interface and bilingual invoice, quote and statement templates. Xero's interface is English and Arabic templates require custom work. For a Saudi finance team and Saudi customers, native Arabic removes a whole category of friction.

The wider suite

Zoho Books is one app in Zoho One: Zoho CRM deals become invoices, Zoho Inventory shipments create them, Zoho Expense claims post to the ledger, and Zoho Payroll journals arrive automatically. Xero connects to a large marketplace of third-party apps, each integrated separately. For a company that will grow into CRM, inventory and HR, the suite matters.

Migration from Xero

Moving from Xero to Zoho Books is a well-trodden path: chart of accounts, contacts, items, open invoices and bills, and bank balances are migrated, with history kept as opening balances or transaction imports depending on your needs. We do it with reconciliation at cut-over; see Zoho migration.

Who should choose which

  • Choose Zoho Books if you operate in Saudi Arabia and need native VAT returns, e-invoicing and Arabic, or plan to use CRM, inventory or HR from the same suite.
  • Stay on Xero if your Saudi entity is small, your group reports on Xero globally, and you are prepared to handle VAT and e-invoicing with connectors and adapted reports.
